He was a descendant of the Sung minister Yü Yün-wen. He was a follower of Wu Ch'en. In 1297 his connections brought him the appointment as a professor in the Ta-tu lu School of Studies. During the 1330's he was made a Reader-in-Waiting at the Ku'ei-chang Hall. All Yü Chi's calligraphy, whether it be semi-cursive, cursive, standard, or seal script, is well-ordered. In this piece the brush moves rapidly but never without vigour.&*虞集(西元一二七二-一三四八年),字伯生。文宗時任奎章閣侍讀學士。世稱邵庵先生。學問博洽,以書法名世。工真、行、草、篆,皆有法度。 此幅書法典雅超妙,筆力遒勁簡穆,字裡行間,爽利清通,神采奕奕。選自「元人舊跡」冊。&*Yü Chi served as Academician in the Hall of Literature under Emperor Wen-tsung. Of considerable learning, he was also famous for his calligraphy. He excelled at standard, running, cursive, and seal scripts, which all followed the established forms. The calligraphy in this work is classically elegant and exceptional. The brushwork is strong yet solemn, while the distance between the characters and lines is fluid and varied for a spirited feeling. This is from the album Traces by Yüan Calligraphers.
